In the winter night when cold breeze chilled your trembling body, each breathes you’d heaved became a short-lived fog that would disappear sooner that you expected. It was the same as him like those people who would pass by. But still, he wasn’t that similar to them after all.
His one-lidded eyes were concentrating on one figure by the windowed coffee shop just across the street from where he was standing at. He carried a smile so pure and innocent. It was something meant to be treasured and preserved but Hyukjae couldn’t help but to wonder why. Why must eternal rest take that smile away from the world?
“It couldn’t be help, Hyukjae. No one could change it. It was written like that.” Hyukjae didn’t need to look back just to be cautious of who had spoken. He knew it was him, someone whom he could be classified the same with.
“I just don’t understand why it is too soon for him. He is young. He has a lot of things to do for his life, for his future… but why must he be taken so soon?” wondered Hyukjae. His friend whom was called Leeteuk shrugged but upon realizing what Hyukjae meant shocked him. Leeteuk raised an eye brow but shook his original thoughts.
“This is quite new Hyukjae-ah… hearing those words from you?” snorted Leeteuk, remembering that Hyukjae didn’t budge when he was about to take a life a child much younger to his target now. “…It must be a dream.” complimented or rather mocked Leeteuk with a smirked. Hyukjae released a glare, about to strangle his hyung. “You know, instead of staring at me, you should get going since you’re target is moving on.” remarked Leeteuk, pouting his lips towards the coffee shop. Eunhyuk snapped out of it and looked to his purpose. Indeed, Leeteuk was right that he needed to get going.
He glared to Leeteuk for the last time and stuck his tongue out, “I’ll get you hyung after my assignment is done!” laughed Hyukjae with scheme. Leeteuk playfully saluted at his dongsaeng and nodded with tease but as soon Hyukjae’s figure was out of sight, everything changed within him. His smile faded, turning into a frown that couldn’t be drawn. A sigh escaped his mouth breathing with so much difficulty. Once again, he looked to where Leeteuk had disappeared into. A smile of sorrow but with a little hope was pasted on his overly kind face. “ I just hope what he said wouldn’t come true.” He muttered as he disappeared into thin air.
-------------------
Eunhyuk kept a good distance from his assignment, making sure he wouldn’t get busted by this jolly man and accused him of stalking him. Although being different had its advantages like turning invisible, it never crossed Hyukjae to use it except if he really needed to. He rather observed him from afar knowing the was a chance they could actually meet unlike being invisible just like an air that could give guidance but never could be seen.
He watched him as the latter stabbed his key to the door knob of his door and twisted it open.
“Lee Donghae.” breathed Eunhyuk as he lean his back to the wall beside him. “21 years old, a student in Seoul University Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Communication Arts, he have a pet dog named Bada. He have a deceased father, a mother and an older brother.” said Hyukjae, mentioning the profile about his target. No one in particular listened to what he detailed about the young man. He didn’t really care anyways. Maybe he was just looking… looking for a reason why must the latter die so early with so many things that could be laid upon his future.
Yes, him… Leeteuk… and some others out there, they were the angels of death that some people believe. They were the deliverers of souls that eternal rest took, either in heaven or either in hell they would deliver them.
And then, his Leeteuk hyung’s words replayed on his mind. “This is quite new Hyukjae-ah… hearing those words from you? … It must be a dream.”
Was it really unusual for him to sa those words, or even just think about it? Thinking aback, this was always the first time he let out his thoughts about his assignment. It was always ‘I-don’t-care’ attitude that masked his troubling heart. He didn’t want to pry about the cycle of life he had woken up with one night. He didn’t even consider making a move when his assignment before was a baby, a baby so innocent and pure. Maybe he just had enough.
But he remembered it was a cycle, n endless realm. There was no starting line or an ending line. It was just a cycle, continuous and flawless.
He vanished into thin air and reappeared into darkness and only a dim light shone its brilliance. He was in a room, in ‘his’ room. He glance by the big lump underneath the sheets placed over to seemed to be bed. He was sleeping, travelling his mind to the dreamland that could grant his desires.
Eunhyuk looked at him with desire. He looked at him with full of awe. Indeed, Donghae was handsome and he would testify on that. Hyukjae flinched when Donghae stirred at his sleep. He realized he was about to cup his face. It wasn’t supposed to be like that and never should have. But Hyukjae couldn’t help it, there was something about Donghae Hyukjae couldn’t explain.
“Something new…” He quoted his hyung’s words. Instead of being annoyed, a smile curved in his face. He looked at Donghae, breathing ever so calmly. Something enlightened his feeling, something he never experienced before. It was like burning but doesn’t hurt. He liked that feeling, hoping he could it endlessly.
----------------
Like his usual routine after he got Donghae as his assignment, he set himself far from him. He wouldn’t still consider going invisible. He was still hoping. He was staring at him like there was no tomorrow, truly amaze by the beauty laid upon him.
His heart thumped faster a moment he didn’t expect. Smile was pasted on his angel-like. Eunhyuk knew he was blushing indeed with now Donghae staring at him amusingly. Eunhyuk didn’t know what to do next. He was too shy. He smiled back shyly and gave a nod of acknowledgement. Donghae did the same then continued what he was doing. Eunhyuk was taken back, yet it kept his heart on pounding. He asked himself if it really happened. Everything seemed unreal and he couldn’t believe it. He looked stupid right now he’d say. He wished it this moment to happen and now that it finally happened, he couldn’t believe himself. “Paboya~” He smacked his own forehead.
“Excuse me…”
“Wah!” Eunhyuk yelped, almost jumping off from the seat he was sitting. Surprises for this day never stopped.
“Err… Sorry… I didn’t mean to-“
“ANIYOIT’STOTALLYFINE!” Eunhyuk panicked. Everyone inside the café looked at their direction, alerted about the commotion and that added the shades of red into his cheeks. He mouthed a sorry and seated completely embarrass. Donghae did the same opposite and left Eunhyuk totally confused.
Seeing the confused look Eunhyuk’s face, Donghae initiated to explain, “Sorry… its just that the café is getting full and I’m sure a lot of people wanted to enjoy their coffe. Since both of us were alone, I thought we could just share the table.” Donghae explained and all Eunhyuk could come up with was a simple nod. Actually, what Eunhyuk was confuse about was why couldn’t he read Donghae’s mind so suddenly. He didn’t see that Donghae was actually thinking of doing that. Maybe he was just pre-occupied too much that it didn’t clear his mind and couldn’t enter Donghae’s mind that time.
It was a bit awkward first since Eunhyuk couldn’t speak a word. He was still dazed and Donghae seemed to be working on something in his notebook. Although he knew what was Donghae working with, he still asked about it,
“So what are you doing?” Eunhyuk bit his lower lip know he sounded rude just now for acting like they were close even though it was the first time they saw each other. Well, that was in Donghae’s side he added. But still, how could he act so stupid now the limelight he had been wishing was finally spotted to him. But instead of a surprise or rather being annoyed, smile was still evident in Donghae’s face.
“Oh, this… it’s a lyrics. It’s really nothing…” Donghae replied shyly. Eunhyuk made an ‘oh’ sound. It seemed the topic died already since Eunhyuk couldn’t find the proper words to follow-up.
“Jongmal paboya Eunhyuk!” He hissed to himself.
“Uhm, did you say said something?” Donghae asked and Eunhyuk shook his head, laughing nervously. Donghae nodded and then spoke, “Sorry, I haven’t properly introduce myself, I’m Lee Donghae…” He pasued then offered his hand, “You are?”
“Lee Hyukjae… but you can call me Eunhyuk.” Eunhyuk smiled, his gums were showing. He reached out and shook Donghae’s hand.
“Nice to meet you.” Donghae said. Now the red shade on his cheeks were no longer result of embarrassment but rather the result of his fast heartbeat.
It was hard for Eunhyuk to control his excitement or acting like he didn’t know Donghae at all. He was glad he was able to hold on and never blew that cover but then he couldn’t help blushing from time to time. Seconds turned minutes. Minutes turned hours and hours turned days. They kept bumping to each other or was it only Eunhyuk’s bidding but he careless. All he wanted was to spend time with Donghae. Before he knew it, days became weeks that they were practically always together. He might broke a lot of rules of their kind but he didn’t care. All that matter was was to be with Donghae.
“Why are you doing this Hyukjae?” Hyukjae snapped to the back seeing a familiar figure. He was in Donghae’s apartment that time upon the request of the latter. Eunhyuk was washing his hands when Leeteuk appeared, leaning his back by the bathroom. Eunhyuk just continued what he’s doing. “Don’t ignore the facts Eunhyuk. He was meant to leave and you can’t delay farther more. Stop this Hyukjae.” Leeteuk almost shouted at him. And that got Eunhyuk facing Leeteuk.
“What if I don’t want to end his life?” He paused his words, uncertain if he was saying the right words but he needed to let out how he really felt. “I love him hyung! I don’t want to end his life. I want to live with him.” Eunhyuk finally burst everything. He knew that even if he shouted like that, no one would hear, even Donghae wouldn’t hear a single word. They were never meant to be known by the humans at all.
“Hyukjae! You couldn’t love a human! IF you think loving him will make you normal again, forget it! You will never be a human again!” Leeteuk raised his voice.
“But we are human before hyung. We did become human and we’ll still be no matter what.” Hyukjae snapped back.
“Please Hyukjae, stop this before anything will happen that you will regret forever.” Leeteuk pleased, approaching Eunhyuk but the other turned away.
“There won’t be regrets hyung. Whatever will happen to me, I am ready to face…” Hyukjae paused then looked back to Leeteuk, “ I’m happy hyung. Gomawo but this is how I feel.” Eunhyuk gave out his gummy smile. Leeteuk showed a faint smile but with relief. He knew that everything will be alright even though what he knew that was stored for someone who was like Eunhyuk. Leeteuk nodded and hugged Hyukjae before he disappeared into thin air. Eunhyuk sighed and smiled to himself. He was sure to himself.
Yes, they were humans before but something happened that made them like that. They couldn’t remember the life they had. They just woke up one time and they were like that. No memories nothing at all except their names.
When Hyukjae came out from he bathroom, darkness indulged his eyes. Only a lit candle guided his way. “Donghae?” He called. No response until a breathe tickled the back of his neck.
“Hae?” He called again.
“It’s been weeks since we met Hyukjae, right?” Donghae said and Eunhyuk nodded even if Donghae couldn’t see it in the darkness. He was lead by Donghae as approached the single light.
“Since that day, I felt like this.” Donghae continued and that made Hyukjae confused.
“What do you mean?” Hyukjae asked. He looked back to Donghae. He saw his genuine smile even in the darkness that surrounded them.
“You were my light in the darkness of loneliness…” With those words, Eunhyuk felt his heart stopped beating. It was like time stood still, only Donghae’s words floated around the air. All he asked now was to hear those 3 words he had wanted to hear.
“I love you…”
There were no more words that were released. Words weren’t enough to express how much happy he was that he sealed it with a kiss of love and longing instead. A sweet kiss they shared, warmed by a single light that existed in their own oblivion. It was a burning feeling that Hyukjae felt before… but this time he shared it with Donghae.
---------------
They were walking hand in hand, not paying attention to the judging eyes that were concentrating on them. They didn’t care how the world would look to them. As long as they had each other, only that mattered.
They were crossing the road that time when a blinding light caught Eunhyuk’s eyes by his left side. It was like everything is in slow motion around Eunhyuk when he turned to see the light that would approached them. Everything was indeed in dawdling pace except for him. When he turned to the light, looking for its source, a gasp escaped his lips and a familiar figure triggered Eunhyuk’s worries.
“Leeteuk hyung?” Eunhyuk mumbled faintly. Leeteuk , like him that can move normal, gave a nod and mouthed something that clarified Eunhyuk’s worries. “It’s time…”
It rang to Eunhyuk’s ears as if Leeteuk whispered it just by his ears. He looked at Donghae shocked. He closed his eyes and before he knew it, everything became the exact opposite. Everything moved fast as he acted by in impulse and pushed the man he dearly love, taking the blow on his own.
CRASH!
“Hyukjae!” He head his lover screamed. He lied there with blood splashed to him. Still a contented smile lingered in his face. He felt him being hauled close by someone upon seeing his face. His smile show his gums, a smile that he rarely used.
“Hyukjae… please be alright..” Donghae started, cries now evident in his face.
“Never d-did I regret… never will I… sa-sarang-h-hae…” those worse were his last as he took his well deserved timeless slumber that was meant for Donghae.
He didn’t care what would await him after what happened. He didn’t care what would happen to someone like his kind after they die breaking the rules, saving someone that was meant to be taken. He didn’t took Donghae’s life, instead he prolong it. But never he reget anything.
Leeteuk look down seeing a hurtful sight. Someone higher than Leeteuk had seen this coming that he warned him about Hyukjae. He did his best to stop Hyukjae yet the other seemed happy and contented. He just wished that if Hyukjae would be happy in that place eternally, now that he knew what else would be ahead for Eunhyuk.
----------------
Eunhyuk felt hot around him yet there were no sweat that trailed his face or his body. Slowly, his eyes twinkled open. It was nothingness except for a burning fire that surrounded him. He should feel hurt and pain for this was the punishment of the defying the rules but none of it he felt. He was indeed contented and that was enough reason to feel nothing but bliss even in the hotness of the endless burn. He was startled when suddenly a hand wrapped in his waist.
“Hyuk…” Hearing those voice, Eunhyuk felt calmed and then it alarmed him.
“Hae, what are you doing here?” He asked puzzled after turning around and cupping his face, checking if the man in front of him was indeed Donghae.
“H-hae!” He almost choked when realizing everything was real. “ How come you-“ He couldn’t finish his words when the other sealed it with his lips. Donghae looked through his eyes as he did the same with him.
“I’m sorry Hyuk… b-but…” Donghae paused, nuzzling his left cheek with Eunhyuk’s right hand he was holding into? His eyes were close, savoring the presence of the other within his reach. “I can’t live… without y-you… Hyukkie.” Donghae finished his words and that surprise Hyukjae yet it melted his hear.
“I love you… Hyukjae…” Donghae whispered through Eunhyuk’s ears. He kissed Hyukjae’s closed eyes with tears dried right away by the lively fire that surrounded them, not letting it trail Hyukjae’s face. He then kissed down to the tip of his nose, feeling each other’s breathe so close. Finally, he captured those red mumps that was so inviting and addicting. It turned deeper and deeper as they held each other so close.
Everything that surrounded them was fire, burning them in eternal blaze that would give you nothing but ache. An inferno of hell that ate them but still the bliss and gratification could be seen within their face. An endless burn entitled to bring pain, punishing those who disobey the rules and those who disregard life.
Still for them, having each other in the realm of suffering with their hearts beating as one had kept them peace and secure even if they were surrounded by the everlasting pain. The fire of hell that gave them an endless burn of pain turned to an endless burn the fire of their love had created. There were no regret for that endless burn never faded and forever kept burning…
…the endless burn of the passion of their love.
FIN.
